Back in the saddle again, sort of!

It has been a long time since 2009 duathlon worlds, but after much patience, help from friends and family, and a little good luck I was able to make it to the start line of a race again.
Having never ran a 20k before, Sunday’s Boston Build up 20k event through the rolling hills of Fairfield offered a challenging way to get back into the swing of things. It was fun to see familiar faces on the start line as the whole field looked for protection from a relentless wind and jumped around to stay warm in the 20 degree temperatures.
Only wanting to use the event as a fun training session, I quickly gave up any pacing strategy in the 1st minute of the race as I matched pace with the front of the field in my bright new Avia “Troy Lee Special” Bolts. Definitely not fast enough for these shoes! Before long it was a 2 man race and I thought to myself, well I guess I’m committed now.
With 1mile left the pace was a bit too much so I eased off of the gas and trotted to the finish with my son and posted a respectable time for 2nd place.
It’s good to be back, and better to be healthy.
