Greenwich Cup Triathlon
Targetraining made an impressive showing, with four top ten overall finishes, at the Greenwich Cup Triathlon on August 1. The weather was perfect for racing. The field was packed with 662 finishers.
The tides caused the swim to be slightly longer than last year with the elite swimmers taking approximately two minutes longer to finish. The bike course returned to its proper length of 25K having been shortened by almost a kilometer last year due to construction. The run was slightly less than its purported 5K.
Former Targetraining coach, Suzie Snyder, made a cameo appearance traveling from Virginia and led most of the race. Late in the run, she was passed by three men, so she finished fourth overall and won the women’s division. Her time was 1:13:59.
Megan Kelly took second in the women’s division and finished ninth overall with a time of 1:17. Thirty-seven seconds behind Megan was Max Veiga. Max finished tenth overall and won the ultra-competitive men’s 40-49 division. Max is an accomplished duathlete, with an age group win at Nationals, but he is new to triathlon this season and is making a strong case for triathlon rookie of the year.
Kristin Budden and Gena Deribeaux provided Targetraining’s fourth and fifth podiums. Kristin won the women’s 30-39 division with a time of 1:19:23, and Gena took third in the women’s 40-49 division with a time of 1:28:14.
Carlos finished his first triathlon in 1:24:55. The frugal race director did not provide ankle chips, so there are no time splits. However, I’m sure his bike leg was smoking fast.
Many other Targetraining athletes competed as blue and white jersey were everywhere. One example is, swimmer and first year triathlete, Paul Filanowski who finished in 1:33:29. I finished in 1:38:44 which put me in the top half of the men’s 40-49 age group.
