New England Winter Triathon

It's here! Released today - the new New England Winter Triathlon schedule for 2011.

The races are as follows:

Sunday, January 9th - Weston, MA
Winter Duathlon

Suday, January 23rd - Gilford, NH
Winter Triathlon

Sunday, February 13th - Weston, MA
Winter Triathlon

Last year I participated in the Weston Duathlon and the Gilford long course Triathlon. These were both totally awesome and a blast. It was about 5 degrees for the Weston duathlon and there were six inches of fresh snow for the Gilford triathlon. I'm planning on doing them again this year.

There are a few things you need to race:

Warm socks (wool), a warm hat and balaclava, and a mountain bike. The mountain bike can be a beater one from 20 years ago you used in college. All ski equipment can be rented on sight. In icy conditions something like yak trax help, but I didn't need 'em last year.

Let me know if you'd like more information. Lessons are available at each location too, or else locally at Winding Trails and Fahnestock and these were great local locations to prep at. Not coincidentally, most of the people I met last year were cyclists that use cross country and skate skiing to cross train in the winter. :)

Oh - and there's a night race series for skate and cross country at Winding Trails in West Hartford on Wednesday nights starting in January or February. I raced this series in 2009 and it was amazing cross training. 5K races, in the dark, in the woods, with head lamps. How fun is that? A blast!
