Kids' Tri

Last week I told you all about how I was a guest speaker at a local camp in Rye where nearly all of the campers between the ages of 6 and 12 compete in an annual triathlon. This past Tuesday was the triathlon where I watched and cheered for 150+ mini-triathletes between the ages of 6 and 12. The first thing I noticed when I showed up was T1; I had spent some time talking about transitions and sure enough, some kids even set up their little areas with everything lined up in order.

Some race waves were already in progress so I moved down to the beach where the older boys were about to start. There were only a handful of them and they were both psyched
to start, and excited to see me there. After answering a few of their questions, I sent them off:
After the quick swim they had to move to T1, hop on their bike and complete 3 bike loops (about 4 miles) before heading into T2 and a 1 mile run. The kids were animals! Despite the oppressive heat and the long beach sprint finish, I did not see one athlete walk...impressive!
Then the fun part, the interview. The coaches spent a few minutes asking me questions in front of the crowd about my experiences, and then moved on to a 60 second rapid-fire segment. I made it through just fine, and hopefully motivated a few kids in the process! I emphasized to them how lucky they were to not only be starting the sport at such a young age, but to have a huge group to train with. I told them how valuable my experience with Target has been, and I meant it. Thanks guys!
